Vehicle protection plans: are they worth it?
5 min read · 2026-04-20
Understanding extended warranties, GAP insurance, and dealer add-ons before you sign.
Vehicle protection products vary widely. Extended service contracts may cover certain repair costs after the manufacturer warranty ends, but coverage limits, deductibles, exclusions, and claim procedures can differ a lot from one plan to another.
GAP insurance makes the most sense when you have little equity and the car could depreciate faster than the loan balance declines. That is especially relevant for long terms, high LTV financing, or purchases with very little money down.
The right way to evaluate add-ons is to compare cost against realistic value. Ask what is optional, what is already covered elsewhere, and whether buying a product today actually fits the age, price, and financing structure of the vehicle you are considering.
